Travelling Outfit

The first gown she wears in the movie is a traveling set consisting of a coat and matching dress. The dress seems to be of a medium-weight wool. Because of the bulk of the material gathers on the bodice of any kind are out of the question. For this dress, darts were used. Note the darts placement in the accompanying ink drawing. This dress illustrates very well how darts were done on gowns of that time period.

The accompanying coat is made of a matching fabric. This suggests to me that if you really wanted to go for the matched dress/coat look, you'd have to use a substantial fabric to make the coat comfortable in cooler weather. The coat has gigot sleeves with a turn-back cuff on the sleeve.

The waistband is set high and functions as a means of closure. Two buttons are used on the waistband (see diagram for placement). The coat bodice is plain with a collar and turned-down lapels. The skirt is gathered at the center back. This would make an excellent winter coat with the sleeves slightly modified. A wool or velvet would be lovely--or maybe even a linen for spring!!
