Gibson Braids

This is one of my favorite Edwardian styles–it is so easy and beautiful! can do it on myself, so I am confident that others will be able to easily as well. My model is my 8 year old sister, Anna. She just loves buns and braids, and allows me to pull and tug on her hair to my heart’s content!

Gibson Braids, step 1

Start with a ponytail that is a little loose. Using a long-tailed comb, make a part starting at the crown of your head and running all the way down to the nape of your neck. Push your thumbs up from the nape of your neck into the split in your hair. Grab the ponytail with your thumbs and bring it down. This forms a basic flip. Next divide the flip into three equal parts and braid each one. Use one elastic band to secure all three braids together as close to the ends as you can get.

Gibson braids, step 2
Fold the braids up and tuck the ends and the elastic band down into the flipped section of hair.

Gibson braids with barrette Gibson braids final
Pin in place, catching the elastic band with one of the pins. Attach a pretty barrette or flowers just above the flip.

This is a beautiful hairstyle! My hair is extremely long though. Is there any way I can do this with longer hair?

I have done this before when my hair is hip-length, and my solution is to braid the extra length of the three braids together, then coil that braid into a bun above the three-braid section.

This is so beautiful, yet so easy! My hair is only a few inches below my shoulders, but I have done it on a friend with knee length hair! What we did was make several more braids, (I think we did 6 or 7) tuck them in, and leave the loops hanging down her back! It’s really beautiful too!
